CALL FOR PROPOSALS: IPO DAILY NEWS SEEKS MEMBER CONTRIBUTIONS FOR RECURRING SERIES AND COLUMNS

IPO invites members to submit proposals for recurring columns, series, or other regular content to be published in the IPO Daily News beginning later this year. This initiative is intended to expand opportunities for members to share insights and perspectives on intellectual property law, policy, and practice, and to further enhance the value of the publication to the IPO community.

Proposed topics might include IP policy issues, district court or regional circuit court opinions, international IP developments, practice trends, or other matters of interest to IPO members. Proposed formats may include recurring columns, periodic analysis, interview series, explainer pieces, or other structured content. Proposals should include a brief description of the proposed topic and scope and anticipated frequency (e.g., weekly, monthly, quarterly). For reference, Daily News items are generally at least 100 and no more than 250 words. Please also include a short writing sample representative of the proposed content.

Contributors may participate individually or on behalf of an IPO committee. Members interested in submitting a proposal should contact Samantha Grover.

TIPS AND TRICKS

Long Sentences — Break them up: (1) by splitting them into two or more sentences separated by periods or semicolons; (2) by replacing commas with em dashes; or (3) by finding the key portion of the sentence and moving it to the end, introduced by a colon.

Better Words —One READER sees documents addressed to the USPTO that begin with “Dear Sir.” He suggests “Dear Director,” “Dear Commissioner,” or “Dear Examiner.”  Another reader sees “that” being used to refer to a person previously mentioned in a sentence. Use “who” for people.  She’s the one who invented it.

Edit, Edit — I quoted the “famous’ bank robber Willie Sutton. A friendly reader (who said he’s a curmudgeon too) suggested “notorious.”

“Helpful” Tips— Can a tip be unhelpful? Just say “tips,” or “hints.”

Quote of the Week — “Writing, the art of communicating thoughts to the mind through the eye, is the greatest invention of the world . . ..” — ABRAHAM LINCOLN
